Hi, all! I got off work absurdly early tonight, and as a result will not be doing anything at 2 in the morning! Instead, authors/artists will be revealed for the madness collection around midnight Eastern time (possibly slightly later if I leave the house again tonight), while the collection will remain open for posting until I get up in the morning - most likely sometime between 7 and 8 am Eastern time.

Authors and artists have now been revealed for the X-Men Remix 2017 collection! Since this is happening so early in the day, we’ll be revealing authors/artists for the Madness round separately (see below).

The X-Men Remix Madness 2017 collection will have authors/artists revealed and close for posting when unforgotten gets home from work tonight (around 2am Eastern Time). If you are still working on a madness fic at that time, posting it will be between you and the original author/artist.

Thanks so much to all our participants! The final(ish) count is 22 works in the main collection and 39+ (!!) works in the madness collection, for a total of 61+ (!!!) new X-Men works.

Thanks so much as well to everyone who signed up for the pinch hit list, and especially to afrocurl and Unforgotten, who each wrote a pinch hit.

And a special shout-out to the people writing for Madness, at least one of whom had the extremely clear goal of making sure everyone who signed up for Madness received at least one remix - yes, the mods noticed you, and we can’t say how happy your efforts make us. <3

Finally, thanks to everyone who kudos’d, commented on, and/or recced anything in the collections. Feedback makes the world go round!

Usually, this part of this message would be where we would say when we expect next year’s exchange to run. However, there is a chance this was X-Men Remix’s last year.

Why? We had 22 signups this year when we usually have 27-30, which we consider a very steep drop-off after the fairly level numbers from 2013-2016. Additionally, almost everyone who signed up this year had signed up for XM Remix previously or had otherwise been in the fandom for quite some time. We had almost no new people sign up this year, which suggests that while people are leaving the fandom the way they always have, not enough new people may be joining to keep things going. (Yes, we had our best ever turnout for Madness re: works posted...but even there we had significantly fewer signups than for the last couple years.)

Long story short, if current trends continue, we’re concerned about fandom’s ability to sustain a remix exchange going forward. But we are going to look at it again next spring, and let you guys know what’s going to happen once we’ve taken stock. There will probably be a poll involved.

If the main exchange does not run in 2018, we may run a Madness round by itself, then run the main exchange again in winter 2019 after Dark Phoenix comes out...but we can’t make long-term promises one way or the other without knowing what the fandom’s going to look like (or whether or not we’ll still be here ourselves, tbh - after six years of being in this fandom, it may be that the next one is just around the corner).

As a final note: In the event that this was XM Remix’s last year, then we would like to say that running it has been a great pleasure. We love remixes and the creativity they inspire; that the XMFC fandom has produced over 260 of them over the past five years is incredible to us. Thanks for being so awesome, guys. <3

Remix Madness

X-Men Remix Madness 2017 is now live! Although the works are now visible, the collection will remain opening for prompts and posting through the end of the day on July 9!

As a general reminder, it is perfectly acceptable and even encouraged for you to post-date your fic/art in both the madness collection and the main collection. Post-dating means that you edit your work to give it today’s date instead of the earlier date it was posted. This allows more people to see your work during the anon period, versus few people outside of the exchange seeing it if it’s buried further back in the tag. All we ask is that you limit post-dating to once during the anon period and once afterward, so that you are not constantly leapfrogging over the other participants...so if you have not already post-dated, that is an option that is available to you. :)

Hi everyone! Here’s the update I've been hoping to be able to give you ahead of the opening date. :)

All the pinch hits are in, so the main X-Men Remix collection will open on time, at 10AM Eastern time tomorrow. If you are still editing your remix, please be finished by then!

The Madness collection will open 24 hours later, at 10AM Eastern time on Monday, and will remain open for posting through the 9th. It will remain open for signups through that date as well.

If you did not turn in your assignment, you have now been defaulted and your assignment sent to pinch hit. If you finish your assignment anyway, you may still post it to the collection if you want.

Assuming both pinch hits are turned in on time, the collection will open around 10am Eastern Time on July 2. There may or may not be a post confirming the time later this week, but if you are still editing your remix, please plan to be finished by this time.

As an additional reminder, Remix Madness is now open for both signups and posting. It will go live a day after the main collection, on July 3, and will remain open for signups and posting until the end of the day on July 9.

(One reason for the deletion is that crossposting across three comms was a bit of a hassle, especially considering that most people get all their news from tumblr anyway; the other reason is that I deleted my personal LJ, which caused most of the content in the LJ comm to go poof.)

Note on reveals

Hey guys, there’s a slight change to the way we’re doing reveals this year!

The main collection will have authors/artists revealed something this afternoon, probably around 3pm.

The madness collection will remain anonymous for the rest of today and will have authors/artists revealed sometime before eleven a.m. Eastern time tomorrow. You may continue posting to the madness collection until authors/artists have been revealed. Once reveals have occurred, we ask that you do not post any new works to the collection.

Our official wrap-up post will also be tomorrow morning, when we have a full and accurate count of the works in the madness collection.

X-Men Remixes are due in about eight hours, but X-Men Remix Madness is open for prompts and fills for the next two weeks!

If you signed up for X-Men Remix 2016 and want to do more remixes, didn't sign up but want to do a remix anyway, don't want to write/draw anything but would love to have your fics/art remixed, X-Men Remix Madness 2016 is for you! There is no word minimum and you DO NOT have to opt in to be remixed in order to remix other people.

We are running opt-ins for Remix Madness as a prompt meme this year. Opt ins/claiming begins today, September 11. Here is how they work: To opt in to make your works eligible to be remixed, simply click the signup form at the top of the page and fill out the form. To remix someone else, click the "Prompts" link on the left sidebar and "claim" a prompt. Once you have claimed a prompt, you can post your story/art by going to the "Claims" link on the left sidebar. Claiming a prompt does not mean you are obligated to write/draw anything, and more than one person can claim any prompt.

Here is the official schedule for X-Men Remix Madness 2016:

Signups/claiming begins: September 11
Works revealed: September 18
Authors/artists revealed: September 25

You may continue claiming/filling prompts until the end of the day on September 25, so Remix Madness will be open for two full weeks.

Hey guys! This is your reminder that your assignment for X-Men Remix 2016 is due a week from now, at 11:59pm Eastern time on Sunday, September 11th.

To upload your remix, go to the collection > My Assignment > Fulfill. Most of the collection-specific information will be filled out for you, but please don’t forget to include the URL of the fic you remixed in the section that says “This work is a remix, a translation, a podfic, or was inspired by another work.” If you have any issues with uploading, please email us at xmenremix13mods@gmail.com, and we’ll be happy to help!

Please remember, your fic/art must be a complete rough draft when it is posted to AO3! We turned off moderation for the collection due to a technical issue, but we will still be checking remixes as they come in.

Opt-ins for Remix Madness will begin on Sunday, September 11, sometime during the day. Everyone is welcome to participate, whether you signed up for the main exchange or not. You do not have to opt in in order to remix other people, and there is no minimum word count. The collection will open for posting on the same day signups open, and will remain open for signups and posting until authors/artists are revealed on September 25th.

Finally, if you are interested in pinch hitting, our pinch hit list is located here. You are welcome to join the group to receive emails or check in periodically to see if there are any open ones.

Good news for X-Men Remix!!

We found a workaround for our issues with AO3, and were just now able to send out assignments through AO3!

The rest of the challenge will proceed as it usually does, so you guys can ignore the instructions we posted before. When you go to post your remix, check the little box on Open Assignments the way you usually would. If you need to default, use the default button on your Assignments page the way you usually would. If you want to upload a placeholder at the deadline, this is definitely not an invitation to do that - we may still decide to monitor submissions so as to keep the rest of the exchange easy and hassle-free for us mods, so please make sure you are still submitting a complete rough draft.

If the assignment you receive from AO3 today is different than the one emailed to you previously, please contact us at xmenremix13mods@gmail.com so we can straighten you out on the back end. Your first assignment is your real one. If for some reason you do not receive an email from AO3, your assignment will be listed on your Assignments page on AO3.

Also, ignore the fandom tag on your assignment - we had to actually go in and edit everyone’s assignment with different fandoms to get the system to acknowledge the matches. The fandom for this challenge is still the XMFC trilogy (XMFC, DoFP and XMA).

I think that’s it! Thank god that’s over.

If you are participating in this year’s X-Men Remix, please read this post! We want to make sure everyone sees it and knows what is going on.

We finally got an answer about what is going on with matching. Unfortunately, AO3 made some changes to the way matching works earlier this year, and the new system is incompatible with the hand matching we have already done. Long story short, they can’t fix it.

What does this mean for you guys? Not too much. There are just going to be a couple extra steps to posting your remixes this year, plus we had to change some of the way we approach things behind the scenes.

The assignment you already received is still your assignment.

It will not be changing, but you will not receive an “official” AO3 email with your assignment.

If you did not receive your assignment from xmenremix13mods@gmail.com, please contact us ASAP so we can tell you who you are assigned to.

Since we cannot send out assignments through AO3, there will be no “official” assignment page on AO3.

There will also be no little box to check when you go to post your remix, so you will have to manually include the collection name + your recipient’s name when you post your remix to AO3.

To include the collection name: either go here and click “Post to Collection,” or post normally and type xmen_remix16 in the area that says “Post to Collections/Challenges.”

To gift your remix to your recipient, go to the section that says “Gift this work to” and type their username.

If you need to default, please email us.

Since there are no “official” assignment page this year, there is also no “official” default button. If you have to default, we ask that you email us at xmenremix13mods@gmail.com, or send us an ask. You do not need to give a reason for defaulting, and you will still receive a remix if you default.

If you do not contact us about defaulting, but have not turned in a remix by the due date, we will consider you as having silently defaulted, and send your assignment out to a pinch hitter.

Your remix must be complete in rough draft when you submit it to the collection.

We’re sorry to have to do this, since we usually pretend not to notice people turning in incomplete remixes and finishing them after the deadline, but with everything else we have to keep track of this year, we don’t need this to be the year that we find an incomplete remix two hours before the collection is supposed to open.

It is totally fine if your remix is a little rough around the edges when you post it, but no matter how much you intend to edit it before the collection goes live, it must have a beginning, a middle, and an end (if it’s a fic), or must look like something (if it’s art), and must not have placeholder text etc. In order to enforce this, we will be moderating submissions this year. Remixes that are complete and have no other issues will be approved; those that are incomplete or misspell the recipient’s name or something will sit in limbo while we email you about fixing it. If you submit an incomplete remix at the deadline, we will consider that a default, and send your assignment out to a pinch hitter.

As stated every year, there will be no extensions, so please don’t ask.

Assignment emails were just sent out manually. You will have to check the Requests Summary page on AO3 to find the link to your recipient’s works and any other information they may have included, such as a safe work.

If you did NOT receive an email from xmenremix13mods@gmail.com, please check your spam folder. If it is not there, PLEASE email us or send us an ask so we can let you know who you are assigned to!

As of right now, your assignment will NOT show on your Assignments page on AO3. That won’t happen until we are able to send the “official” automated email from AO3, and we still don’t have a timeline on that.

I asked around, and it turns out rarepairfest had the same problem, which took a week and a half to fix (a week for AO3 to get back to them, another few days to actually fix it). They ended up sending out assignments by hand, which is a VERY tempting option and something we are looking into doing now that it looks like this will take longer than a day or two to resolve.

If anyone would like to know who they are going to be assigned to in advance of assignments going out, either email us at xmenremix13mods@gmail.com, or send us a signed-in ask at the tumblr, and we would be glad to tell you! We have all the matches sorted out on a spreadsheet and they will NOT be changing at this point.

We will probably also be pushing the schedule back by a week. So remixes will most likely be due on September 11 now, with the collection opening on the 18th and reveals on the 25th.

ETA: Okay, AO3 got back to me already! I have added the AO3 support account to the collection so that they can take a closer look at it.

If it’s not fixed by the end of the weekend, and we don’t have an estimate for when it will be fixed by then, we will hand-email assignments out.

X-Men Remix 2016

X-Men Remix will be running again in 2016! However, since most of the traffic in this fandom is on tumblr, most/all of our updates this year will now be on our tumblr. See you there!

ETA: Since more people than I thought are following the DW/LJ comms, I will do my best to update at least a few times this year: When the schedule is finalized, when signups are open, and a reminder when there is a week or two left before the deadline. That said, if you want to see the full range of updates, the tumblr is still your best bet!
